A new solution has been launched to provide an effective solution to the issue of crane wheel and rail wear. The Crane Wheel Lubrication system has been developed by Rapid Rail – an engineering company specialising in crane rail systems – in co-operation with lubrication specialist Perma.

"Our goal is to reduce the coefficient of friction, and therefore prolong the life of the rail and wheels," said Paul Howard, director of Rapid Rail. "Rapid Rail automatic crane wheel lubricators have been proven in the most arduous of surroundings and delivered spectacular results for our clients. "This simple self-contained unit does not rely on outside power sources and can be regulated to suit the crane duty cycle, simply be switched off, or even transferred to another crane.

"A specially formulated compound in the delivery canister applies, via the application tip, a measured amount of grease to the inner flange of the crane wheel, transferring directly onto the crane rail thus reducing the wear."

The company added that customers could expect a return on investment after just one year of operation, with wear rates reducing dramatically as the friction rates decreased.

As well as providing an installation service, Rapid Rail is also offering units in kit form for self-fitting.
