Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken delivery of four new tandem lift STS cranes from Liebherr.

The cranes were delivered to the Gulftainer-operated facility in knock-down form for on-site installation, increasing the port’s Liebherr crane count to 16 STS cranes and 12 RTGs.

The new cranes are equipped with expandable tandem and twinlift telescopic spreader equipment and feature Liebherr’s Visuscan Crane Management System. With an outreach of 64 metres, they are capable of servicing the latest proposed megamax size container vessels.

Some of the world’s largest container ships call to KCT, which has sought to continually enhance its position as the region’s leading transhipment hub.

Throughput at Gulftainer’s UAE facilities – KCT and Sharjah Container Terminal – increased by nearly 10% to 2,750,285teu in 2009.
