A new fresh produce transport service officially begins in the spring, utilising technology that, it is claimed, scientifically protects perishable cargo.

Purfresh Transport is being launched by Carrier Transicold under an exclusive agreement with Purfresh. Carrier said the service would provide the container shipping industry with a cost-effective, chemical-free means to protect perishables from spoilage. Purfresh Transport technology purifies the air and surfaces inside the container, helping to eliminate mould, yeasts and bacteria that can ruin a container-load of perishables. Carrier said produce quality would be preserved without the use of chemicals. "Globally, up to 20% of post-harvest losses on average occur during transit," said Luke DiMaggio, Carrier Transicold general manager for global service operations, container products. Carrier will lease Purfresh Transport’s active purification systems to customers on a per-trip basis as part of its SeaCare Solutions programme. Carrier’s worldwide network of service centres will handle the logistics, installation and removal of the Purfresh systems on refrigerated containers.

The service will be initially available on shipping lanes originating in Chile and serving the US west coast and be roll-out globally through the year.
